Grant (non-repayable)
Canada Student Grant for Persons with Disabilities
- Who funds it
- Government of Canada.
- Who qualifies
- Students with permanent disabilities or persistent or prolonged disabilities. Requires medical documentation. Income tested but more generous thresholds than the standard CSG.
- Amount range
- Up to $4,000 per year (CSG-PD) plus up to $22,000 per year (CSG-PDSE for services and equipment).
- How to apply
- Through StudentAid BC. You must complete the CSG-PD documentation form (signed by a qualified medical professional) and submit alongside your StudentAid BC application.
- When to apply
- Same as StudentAid BC, but allow extra time for the medical documentation step (often 2–3 weeks to obtain).
Common pitfalls we see
- Documentation dated more than 3 years ago may be rejected — get a current letter.
- Missing the CSG-PDSE separately — services and equipment funding is a different sub-program (assistive tech, tutors, sign language interpreters).
- Not flagging temporary disabilities — there is a separate Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities sub-program for persistent or prolonged but non-permanent conditions.
FAQ
- What disabilities qualify?
- Permanent disabilities (lifelong conditions) or persistent or prolonged disabilities (functional limitations expected to last at least 12 months). Includes physical, mental health, learning, and other conditions.
- What can the equipment funding cover?
- Assistive technology, tutors, sign language interpreters, attendant care, learning specialists, and other disability-related study supports.
Our take
Many eligible students never apply for CSG-PD because they do not realize their condition qualifies. The bar is functional limitation expected to last 12+ months — broader than most assume. We will help you assess eligibility before you commit to the medical documentation effort.
