Loan (repayable, with possible forgiveness)
BC Loan Forgiveness Program
- Who funds it
- Province of British Columbia.
- Who qualifies
- Eligible health and human services professionals (nurses, doctors, midwives, teachers in underserved areas, etc.) practising in qualifying BC communities. Specific occupation lists apply.
- Amount range
- Up to 20% of outstanding BC student loan balance per year of service, up to a 5-year cap (full forgiveness possible over 5 years).
- How to apply
- Annual application through StudentAid BC's Loan Forgiveness portal. Requires employer verification of practice in eligible community.
- When to apply
- Apply annually after each year of qualifying practice.
Common pitfalls we see
- Not realizing your community qualifies — the eligible communities list updates and includes more rural and underserved BC communities than most assume.
- Missing the employer verification step — your employer must sign off on practice location and hours.
- Forgetting that only the BC portion of your StudentAid BC loan qualifies — the federal portion has separate forgiveness programs (CLF for nurses, etc.).
FAQ
- Does this program forgive both my BC and federal loans?
- Only the BC portion. Federal Canada Student Loan Forgiveness for Family Doctors and Nurses is a separate program with its own eligibility.
- Can I claim forgiveness if I work part-time?
- Generally yes if you meet the minimum-hours threshold for your occupation — verify with the program documentation.
Our take
If you are a healthcare or human-services professional and your placement community qualifies, this is one of the highest-leverage loan reductions available in BC. Plan your post-graduation placement with this program in mind — community choice can be the difference between full forgiveness and full repayment.
