Quick summary: loans vs grants vs bursaries

If you’re planning post-secondary education in British Columbia, navigating the world of student funding can feel overwhelming. Loans, grants, bursaries — what’s the difference? Which ones do you need to repay? How much can you actually get? This guide breaks down every BC student funding option in plain English so you can make informed decisions.

  • Student loans — must be repaid (but repayment assistance available); based on financial need
  • Grants — free money, never repaid; based on financial need and specific criteria
  • Bursaries — free money, never repaid; need-based, often from institutions or specific programs
  • Scholarships — free money, never repaid; merit-based or specific criteria

BC student loans — what you need to know

BC students receive a single integrated loan combining two portions: the Canada Student Loan (federal, from the Government of Canada) and the BC Student Loan (provincial, from the Government of British Columbia). When you apply through StudentAid BC, you are automatically assessed for both.

The Canada portion accrues interest at Prime Rate (variable) or Prime + 2% (fixed) during repayment. The BC portion has been interest-free since February 19, 2019 — 0% interest for the life of the loan.

Lifetime limits are $50,000 for BC student loans and $71,400 for Canada student loans. Your combined integrated loan is one monthly payment covering both.

After graduating, you have a 6-month non-repayment period. The Canada portion is interest-free during school and the grace period. The BC portion is always interest-free. If you struggle to repay, the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) adjusts payments based on your income.

  • Single integrated loan: Canada portion + BC portion via one application
  • BC portion: 0% interest, always
  • Canada portion: interest resumes after grace period (Prime or Prime + 2%)
  • Lifetime max: $50,000 BC + $71,400 Canada
  • 6-month grace period + Repayment Assistance Plan available
  • BC Loan Forgiveness Program may cancel some or all of your BC loan

BC student grants — free money, no repayment

Grants are the most valuable funding type because they never need to be repaid. Most are automatically assessed when you apply for student aid — you do not need separate applications for each grant.

The Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students provides up to $4,200 per year ($525 per month of study) for students with financial need. Single students qualify with family income below $37,701 (maximum grant) and phase out above $69,214. The thresholds scale up for larger families.

The BC Access Grant (Full-Time and Part-Time) provides additional funding for low-to-middle income students at BC public post-secondary institutions. Amounts vary based on financial need and available funding. It is automatically assessed when you apply through StudentAid BC.

Other federal grants assessed automatically include the Canada Student Grant for Students with Dependants (up to $3,600/year), the Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities (up to $2,800/year), and the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (up to $8,000/year for disability-related costs).

The StrongerBC Future Skills Grant offers up to $3,500 per person for BC residents aged 19+ pursuing short-term skills training at BC public institutions. Unlike other grants, this is not need-based.

  • Canada Student Grant for Full-Time Students — up to $4,200/year ($525/month)
  • BC Access Grant (Full-Time) — for low-to-middle income BC public institution students
  • BC Access Grant (Part-Time) — same criteria for part-time students
  • Canada Student Grant with Dependants — up to $3,600/year
  • Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities — up to $2,800/year
  • Services and Equipment Grant — up to $8,000/year
  • StrongerBC Future Skills Grant — up to $3,500, not need-based

BC bursaries — need-based free money

Bursaries are similar to grants — no repayment required — but are typically funded through institutions or specific programs rather than the provincial government. The BC Supplemental Bursary for Students with Disabilities supports full-time or part-time students with documented disabilities.

Health program bursaries are available for students in medical and health-related fields, including the Indigenous Student Recruitment Bursary and the Student Recruitment and Retention Bursary. The BCCSA (BC Construction Safety Alliance) offers bursaries of $1,000 to $2,500 for students in construction safety or occupational health and safety programs.

Most BC post-secondary institutions (UBC, SFU, BCIT, UVic, and others) offer their own bursary programs. These are typically need-based and require a separate application through your school’s financial aid office rather than through StudentAid BC.

  • BC Supplemental Bursary for Students with Disabilities
  • Health Program Bursaries (Indigenous and general streams)
  • BCCSA Bursaries — $1,000 to $2,500 for safety/construction students
  • Institution-specific bursaries — apply through your school's financial aid office

How to apply — step by step

The entire BC student funding system starts with one application. Go to StudentAid BC, create or log into your account, and complete the online application — it takes about 30 minutes.

You will need your Social Insurance Number (SIN), your BC address, your school and program details, and the previous year’s income information (yours and your parents’ if you are a dependent student). Processing typically takes 4 to 6 weeks during peak periods, so applying early is essential.

A single application assesses you for all eligible grants and loans simultaneously — the Canada Student Grant, BC Access Grant, Canada Student Loan, and BC Student Loan. You can decline the loan portion and keep only the grants if you do not want debt.

  • Apply at studentaidbc.ca — one application, 30 minutes
  • Need: SIN, BC address, school/program details, income info
  • Processing: 4-6 weeks — apply early
  • Automatic assessment: all grants + loans you qualify for
  • You can decline the loan and keep only free grant money

Key changes for 2025 and 2026

Two important changes affect current and prospective students. Starting August 1, 2026, students at private for-profit international schools will no longer be eligible for federal Canada Student Grants and Loans. Students already receiving aid may be grandfathered until July 31, 2029.

The Canada Student Loan portion now accrues interest during repayment (resumed April 1, 2023), though it remains interest-free during school and the 6-month grace period. The BC Student Loan portion remains 0% interest — this has not changed since February 2019.

The StrongerBC Future Skills Grant continues to provide up to $3,500 for adult learners pursuing skills training, with no financial need requirement.

  • August 1, 2026 — private for-profit international schools lose federal funding eligibility
  • Canada Student Loan interest resumed April 2023 (0% during school + grace period)
  • BC Student Loan remains 0% interest — unchanged since 2019
  • StrongerBC Future Skills Grant — up to $3,500, no income threshold

Which option is right for you?

The smartest approach is to apply through StudentAid BC and let the system decide. You will be automatically assessed for all grants and loans you qualify for, and you can decline the loan portion and keep only the grants. For adult learners seeking skills training, the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant is accessible regardless of income.

Every student’s situation is different. A personalized review can help you identify every funding option you qualify for and create a strategy to minimize debt.

  • Low-income, full-time: Canada Student Grant + BC Access Grant + loans
  • Middle-income, full-time: BC Access Grant + loans
  • Part-time: Canada Student Grant for Part-Time + BC Access Grant (PT)
  • Students with dependants: Canada Student Grant with Dependants + loans
  • Students with disabilities: Disability grants + Supplemental Bursary
  • Adult learners (19+): StrongerBC Future Skills Grant (up to $3,500)
  • Indigenous students: All of the above + Indigenous-specific programs

Common questions

  • Do I have to pay back StudentAid BC grants?

No. Grants are non-repayable. Loans inside the same StudentAid BC application are repayable. Read your award letter — it specifies the grant portion and the loan portion separately.

  • What is the difference between a BC Access Grant and a Canada Student Grant?

The BC Access Grant is provincial funding for students at BC public institutions. The Canada Student Grant is federal funding available at eligible schools across Canada. You can receive both simultaneously — they are automatically assessed on the same application.

  • Is the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant really free?

Yes. It covers up to $3,500 for eligible short-term skills training at BC public post-secondary institutions. No repayment required. Unlike other grants, it is not based on financial need — it is open to any BC resident aged 19 or older.

  • Can I get student funding as a newcomer or permanent resident?

Yes. Permanent residents and protected persons are generally eligible for the same StudentAid BC programs as Canadian citizens. International students on study permits have different options, typically institutional scholarships and specific international awards.
